The project proposes the following activities designed to improve access to, and use of, broadband services among Tribal members:
- Upgrade existing fiber to carry 1 Gbps of Internet service.
- Install a redundant microwave-based broadband distribution system to the Lassen Indian Health Center, the Tribal Administration and Education Building, and to Tribal residents.
- Install antennas, receivers, and modems (as needed) for Tribal households.
- Implement technologies that have back-up capabilities.
- Upgrade the point-of-presence infrastructure and capacity.
This project will:
- Provide Tribal residents with reliable and affordable Internet service.
- Connect the SIR Educational Resource Center and Library, the Lassen Indian Health Center, and the Tribal Administration and Education building with reliable broadband.
- Create 2 full-time project help-desk technician positions.
- Increase communication throughout the Rancheria and beyond.
- Expand distance learning opportunities for Tribal residents to be able to complete their high school diploma and attend college/university, and engage in continuing education.
- Enhance virtual health care options.
- Enable Tribal residents, businesses, and anchor institutions such as schools, libraries, public safety, and health care facilities to have access to Internet services even when wildfires have disrupted fiber-based service.
- Use microwave technology to distribute broadband to institutional and government Tribal facilities to include: the Lassen Indian Health Center; the Tribal Administration and Educational Buildings; and the residents of the Rancheria.
- Provide low-cost or completely subsidized Internet service at Tribal residences and install at each household the required antennae, receiver(s), and modems to access broadband.
- Provide fault tolerance to a secondary ISP with the capacity to handle critical communications in the event of an outage at the Point of Presence or in the carrier’s fiber optic infrastructure.
The project intends to benefit Tribal residents, students and educators, business owners, employees, job seekers, health care providers and their patients, government personnel, and library users.
